unheard
2018
March 23, 2018 | Canadian Music Centre, Vancouver, BC
March 24, 2018 | Chali-Rosso Gallery, Vancouver, BC
Featuring the Vancouver premiere of Jeffrey Ryan’s a cappella Unheard songs with poetry by Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose.
A potent blend of solo vocal works, art photography, and performative costuming giving voice to the stories of unheard women.
Throughout millennia there is a void. It is a woman’s place. Her actions are critical yet, when her function is served, she disappears while the story celebrates the male hero. Her voice is discouraged, intimidated, silenced. Unheard.
Soprano Heather Pawsey performs unheard, a multimedia evening of new works for solo voice from Canadian composers which explores the silenced stories of unheard women in literature, history, and mythology. Partially staged and framed within compelling photographs by artist Maggie MacPherson, with ritualistic performative costuming by Diane Park, unheard features the Vancouver premiere of Jeffrey Ryan’s Unheard songs with poetry by Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose.
